Undercurrent

Undercurrent is a study in how far a single color can travel. Pale powder blue reads almost as air, cobalt arrives with real intensity, and navy settles into near-black, so the grid moves between lightness and depth from block to block. Sand and taupe bring warmth into an otherwise cool palette, keeping the composition grounded and inviting rather than austere.

Undercurrent

In the Space
Undercurrent shifts its temperament with its setting. Against stone and brushed steel in a corporate lobby, it reads as crisp and composed, a clear note of color in a restrained palette. Beside walnut, marble, and brass in a private lounge, its cobalt takes on a richer, more luxurious tone. In a high-rise residence, it holds its own against an expansive view, while in a dark cocktail bar its pale blues and sand glow under focused light. In a restaurant, it suits a sunlit coastal dining room as naturally as an intimate, low-lit bar.

Up Close
The geometric precision of the grid gives way to deep physical topography. Each individual square is built using heavy-body acrylics applied with palette knives, creating layered, sculptural peaks and valleys. This raw impasto texture catches directional light, casting subtle micro-shadows within the boxes that shift throughout the day as the room's ambient light changes.

The Material Connection
The heavy, organic texture inside the grid serves a structural purpose in commercial design. Under directional spotlights or natural daylight, the dimensional ridges of the paint catch the light, adding motion to the composition. This raw, hand-sculpted quality provides an excellent textural contrast to sleek commercial surfaces like polished stone, matte metal, and glass.

Made for Your Space
Undercurrent can be commissioned in a scale, canvas depth, and palette variation suited to your environment, while remaining an original, hand-painted work.
